It's About Time
COLUMNIST... Jack Shaw
The American Psychiatric Association in December 1973 removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders... Dr. Mark Freedman, a San Francisco psychologist, reported in the March issue of Psychology Today that a number of studies of homosexual men and women have shown that many have what psychologists regard as valuable personality traits.
Lesbians, Dr. Freedman concluded "are no more neurotic or disturbed than heterosexual women." Homosexuals, he said, because of intense social pressures against them, begin very early to seek an individual identity, purpose, and meaning, leading them to discover and live according to their own values. He also said that "homosexuals have a wider range of emotional expression because they are not confined by the standard roles."
Another institution is preparing to release a report on the matter of homosexuality; the Catholic Church. A Roman Catholic theologians' committee has prepared a secret study (no longer a secret) challenging the church's stand against homosexuality. At this early stage what will become of this study is anyones' guess. In part, the report read "homosexual orientation is, for all practical pur-

poses, natural and irreversible. This irreversible condition is no more a matter of free choice for a homosexual than their orientation is for heterosexuals."
The resignation of CSU Professor John H. Morrison, chairman of programs in Biology and Health Sciences marks the eleventh (11th that is!) CSU official to announce a resignation during the 1974-75 school year. This rush to leave the school has been attributed as an internal strife on the role of CSU in our community. Many community members feel that CSU has not been responsive to the needs of Greater Clevelanders. The Universities in California work hand-inhand with local business leaders to teach needed community skills, to prepare citizens for the job market; the California universities also have established "OPEN UNIVERSITIES" SO THAT ANY CITIZEN, REGARDLESS OF HIS EDUCATION LEVEL, CAN FURTHER SEEK
AN INDIVIDUAL IDENTITY AND ENRICH HIMSELF. Courses are needed which help individuals increase their sensitivity to the value of the individual person in our society: Much for the progress of Cleveland as a people to work and play together.
